The idea of a ‘performance’ off-road vehicle might be a bit confusing but that hasn’t stopped Mercedes-Benz from making hay with the rather incredible AMG version of the workmanlike G-Wagen. Introduced in 2002, the AMG G-Wagen has redefined what is possible in the automotive world when performance-mad engineers are given a free hand.
Now, Mercedes-AMG have announced the Mercedes-AMG G 63 Grand Edition, limited to 1,000 units worldwide and 20 in South Africa.
“The G-Class is the Godfather of the SUV. A Handcrafted, luxury off-roader that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. This latest edition is beyond special, with only 20 in South Africa. It commemorates the legendary status of the G-Class and confirms its iconic status on and off road,” said Mark Raine, co-CEO of Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
In truth, the Grand Edition differs from regular AMG G 63 models in aesthetic detail only, with the mechanical elements left well alone. Detail highlights in what M-B are calling Kalaharigold Magno are all over the exterior and interior of the car, while the wheels are 22-inch forged alloy AMG items, suitably colour-coded to the body enhancements.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa has announced that many of the 20 examples that will hit SA shores have been spoken for so if you have R5,474,512 sitting burning a hole in your pocket, we suggest you get your order in sharpish.
